Chevron Canvas Art Tutorial

Since I haven't tried anything Chevron yet, I thought I better give it a try!  I am on the blog Tatertots and Jello just about everyday, and got some inspiration from Jen.  I tweaked mine a bit, so I thought I would share my tutorial with you.  I'm just warning you, I took a lot of pictures!  I think pictures help, don't you??

Here are the supplies you will need:
8x8 canvas
paint {I used Lemon Yellow and Salem Blue}
stipple brush
paint brush
scrap paper
fabric {scrap pieces}
burlap {scrap pieces}
sewing machine
foam letter stamps
buttons

First I searched the internet to find a Chevron Template.  I found one at 31 DIY.  She had the perfect template for what I needed!  Yay!!  I love it when that happens.  I cut out the template 3 times for my canvas.
Then I put painters tape on the back to stick the template to the canvas.
Next, I stippled {notice the very stiff bristles}yellow paint around the edges of the template.  You have to be REALLY careful when you are doing this!  Don't use too much paint and stipple upwards, away from the paper {hope that makes sense}.  This way you won't get bleeding under the template!
 Here is what it looked like when I was done stippling.
Now, I used my regular paint brush and filled in the spaces with the yellow paint.  Let it dry completely {about 1/2 hour}.
Here is what it looked like when it was dry.  I have to admit I was a little nervous about whether I would get bleeding, but it turned out fabulous!  No bleeding at all!!
Now, begin cutting out the pennants.  My backing was a 3 inch triangle and I used burlap.  The smaller triangles were 2 inch triangles. I just used fabric that I already had on hand.  Actually I didn't have to purchase anything to make this!  If you had to, it would cost you somewhere around $7.
I used heat n bond {that I have had for YEARS!} to adhere the small triangles onto the big triangles.
Here is when the pictures get ugly.  I probably chose my ugliest rag towel to use for these pics!  Don't judge, please....
Follow the directions on the heat n bond package to adhere the fabric to the burlap.
Here is what the little babies look like when they are adhered.
Next, I took about a 2 x 12 inch long piece of fabric and folded it until it was about 1/4 inch wide, using my iron.
Sew that piece of fabric using a zig zag stitch.  It was a little tricky on my machine.  It didn't like that the piece of fabric was so narrow!
Next, I sewed the pennants on the skinny, long piece of fabric.  I also used a zig zag stitch.  I made 4 triangles for this first pennant.

Nows the fun part!!  I found some foam stamps that I haven't used in years, picked out the letters I wanted, and started stamping the canvas!
When you are foam stamping you need to make sure you don't have too much paint on the stamp.  I always stamp off some of the paint on a piece of paper before I stamp on the surface I am working with.
Here is what it looks like after I finished stamping.  It doesn't need to be perfect, I like it that some of the letters are lighter than others.  It adds to the personality of the project!
Make the second pennant.  I chose to use 3 triangles on this one.  Then I glued the edges of the pennant to the canvas and added a button on the edge.
This project took me about 2 hours to make total.  That includes drying time. Not too bad:)
I am super happy with the way it turned out!  No major ooopsies!
It always feels so good when you finish a project and you LOVE the way it turned out!  Yay!!

Thanks for stopping by.  Have a great weekend!!
