Pleated Pouch Tutorial- Skip to My Lou

When my kids were young I used to make some of their clothes, Halloween, costumes, etc. I kinda got sick of sewing and nothing I made ever really turned out like I expected, so I quit sewing for years.

Now I have found a renewed obsession with sewing purses, totes, etc.! I love how easy they are and they actually turn out the way I want. It makes me happy, so I have bought lots of pretty fabric and I am sewing every day now!

I told you I get obsessed about something, I buy all the stuff for it, and I can't think of anything else! I know......I am OCD.

At least I am accomplishing something:))

So here is my version of a pattern I found on this site:
http://www.skiptomylou.org/2010/04/27/pleated-pouch-tutorial/

She has the best tutorials and they are really easy! Trust me if I can do it, you can. Say to yourself: "I can do hard things." Only this isn't hard!

Above are some pictures of my cute Pleated Pouch. I love the way it turned out. I used some leftover jeans of my 8 year old daughter. She was so excited! I also added a cute matching yo yo. I think it turned out great!

What do you think?

Tutorial: Cute Counting Board Book from Recycled board book

I love, love, love to make board books! They are so easy and really fun. You can't really mess up on them! Here is one I made for my youngest when she was about 3. She loved looking at it. I used lots of pictures that would catch her eye.

I thought some of you might like to know how to make these. I used a old board book that was just laying around my house! If you have young kids you probably have a board book that the kids don't really like that much......PERFECT! Follow these directions to make a lovely little book that your children will treasure! Here is what you will need:

*Old board book that is still in relatively good condition.

*Scrapbook paper (it's fun if you use coordinating paper. I used Basic Grey Lucky paper line)

*Modge Podge

*scissors

*letter or number stamps (optional)

*paper punches

*old magazines

*pictures of your child

*brayer (or I used my handy dandy Pampered Chef plastic scraper)

*ribbon

*glue sticks

1. Find some adorable Scrapbook paper. If you scrapbook, you probably have a ton just sitting around like me. If you don't, go to your nearest craft store, like JoAnn's (sometimes they have 5/$1 sale). Paper really isn't that expensive.

2. Trace the shape of the page on the paper. Do this for each page. For the front and back cover, I use 1 piece of paper and glued it all the way around the book (make sense?). I wanted the binding covered up, because it didn't look so good!

3. When you have all the paper cut out, take the Modge Podge and cover the front and back of the book. Try not to over do it on the Modge Podge, but if you don't put enough, the paper won't stay. Lay the paper on top, matching the edges all around the book. Use a brayer or something with a hard flat edge (you could even use a ruler) to smooth down the paper. You want to flatten out any bubbles that appear. Don't worry if the paper doesn't match perfectly around each edge or goes over the edge, you can fix that later!

4. Let the paper dry completely (an hour or so).

5. Trim around the edges if needed, and you can use an emery board to gently file around the edges if you want to give it the "worn" look. Don't file to much though. The paper might start peeling up.

6. Now is the fun part! Figure out what you are going to do for each page. The possibilties are endless! You can use foam stamps and paint, buttons, pictures or letters from a magazine (i did this on several of my pages).

It's fun to use pictures your child will like and even use pictures of your child. On one of the pages I used Mickey Mouse pictures, because my daughter had an obsession with Mickey for a while! I used lots of paper punches, die cuts and some ribbon. Have fun with it! You can't really mess up...trust me!

7. Let your book dry completely.

These are great gifts! You could give one to a friend as a baby gift, or make one for your Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa (not with numbers of course, but pictures of you with them!). The possibilities are really endless.

I hope you will try this and have fun with it! If you have ANY questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me or leave a comment here.

Have a great day!!

Orange Juice can ornament lid Tutorial

I didn't make this up. I found it in some craft magazine a few years ago. I thought it was such a cute idea, and you can feel good about recycling something! It's such a cool thing:)

The first thing you need to do is drill a hole in the lid. Very easy. Use your hubby's drill. Just big enough for a ribbon to fit through.

Next you find some kind of Christmas image or any holiday. I used a Christmas image I got from Etsy. They have tons of cute digital images on there!

I cut out the image the shape of the orange juice can lid, then glued in on with Modge Podge.

Next, you can add buttons, ribbon, and whatever! I decorated the back too. I glued the buttons, etc. on with glue gun. Find some cute ribbon to string through the hole and Ta Da! You have a totally adorable ornament to give someone as a gift or keep for yourself!

You can even glue pictures of your kids, baby, etc. as well!

If you like these and want to purchase them from my Etsy shop, come visit at:

If you have any questions about this tutorial feel free to leave a comment (I love them!) or e-mail me at kweight@byu.net.

How to Blue Flower Glass pendant Tutorial- Easy!

I love glass pendants that I see on Etsy and I have always wanted to make them. They are really easy to make! Here are some easy directions on how to make the one pictured here:

1. I used a rectangular glass pendant, but there are the square ones too. I traced around some Japanese paper (or you can use scrapbook paper) the size of the pendant. Cut out the paper.

2. Squirt some judkins Diamond Glaze (you can get this at any craft store) on the glass pendant. You don't want too much glaze, or it will ooze out the edges. Then I set the pendant (rough side down) on top of the paper (design side up). I use wax paper to set the pendant on, so it doesn't stick. Then I let the pendant sit on the paper for a few minutes. I also try and wipe any excess glaze off around the edges.

3. After the glaze has dried, I take a nail file and file around the edges of the glass pendant to get any excess glaze and paper off. The paper will be hanging off the edges a bit, so you want to file that off. Let it dry completely.

4, Using Modge Podge(also at craft stores), brush a layer on the back of the pendant. This seals the paper on and makes it look nice! I usually put 2 or 3 layers of modge podge on letting it dry between layers.

5. I used E-6000 industrial strength glue to glue the sterling silver bail on. You can get E-6000 at any craft store. Glue the bail on (large for the rectangle pendant). You only need a small amount of the glue. Make sure the bail is centered. Let the glue dry overnight.

Wasn't that easy? I love how quick these are to make, and they look like you spent forever making them!

Here is a list of Etsy shops where I got my supplies:

How to make Oh Happy Day Flower Card Tutorial

I just can't get enough of flowers....so here is my next tutorial, Oh Happy Day Flower Card! It looks hard, but trust me it is really really easy!
First, for the colored cardstock background, I used orange Coredinations cardstock. I got it at Joann Fabrics and it is new. It's awesome, because the core is light, so when you rip it, you get that look as you can see in the picture. It looks really cool, but you can use any cardstock.

Next, I cut out flowers freehand from patterned paper. For this card I used KI Memories paper, because it all coordinates! When I cut the flowers I cut in a wavy pattern with my scissors. It was totally a random cut, and however you cut them will look fine! I cut them in 3 different sizes.

Then I took each flower in my hand and crumpled them...yes, get your aggressions out and really get those flowers wrinkled! The more wrinkled, the better they look. Then flatten them out on a hard surface. When you glue the flowers on your card, go around the flower to lift up the edges of the paper. It makes the flower looks 3-dimensional.

For the stems and leaves, I used tiny rick rack (not the regular size). For the stems, I just tied a piece of rick rack in a knot and glued them on the stems.

The grass is random cut pieces of green paper, in all different heights. Having a paper cutter helps, but you could also do it by hand.

To finish off the flowers, I glued a button in each of the centers with tacky tape. This tape is extra strong and I glue all buttons and heavy embellishments with this stuff. It's great!

For the center of the large flower, I used a round stamp with the "Oh Happy day" and stamped it on a separate piece of orange paper, then cut it out and glued it in the center of the flower.

Glue the background paper on first, then the large flower, small and medium. Then glue the rick rack on with the stems. Next, glue the grass on the bottom of the card. Lastly, glue the buttons in the center of each flower, and the "Oh happy day" stamped circle. If you don't have a stamp, just use a button!

This card could be for just about any occasion! I don't know anyone who doesn't love to get a handmade card! Your friends and family will be so impressed!

If you have any questions about how to make this card, or where I got any of the supplies, please feel free to e-mail me at kweight@byu.net.

NOW FOR THE GOOD PART! I want to give this card away to someone....From the first 25 people who make a comment on my blog with who they would give this card to and why, I will randomly select a winner on at 10am on July 3rd! Good luck!!

How to make a Paper Scraps Card - Tutorial

I love to make cards and to scrapbook, so I have a LOT of paper scraps laying around. I used to wonder what the heck to do with them, but lately I have been making cards with all my scraps. It's really easy and fun!

1. First, you don't even have to buy pre-made blank scored cards. Just use some white (or any color ) cardstock (you can even use a brown grocery sack!) and cut it down to about 8 1/2 x 5 1/2.

2.Fold it into a card. I like to use a ruler (or bone folder) to make the fold nice and flat.

3. Now find some scraps of patterned or solid color paper, all different colors or patterns. I used about 5 strips of paper around 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches long. Vary the lengths so they are not all the same. They can even be different widths!

4. I inked the edges of each strip with a brown chalk ink. You can even use paint! It gives it a dimensional look.

5. Now, stagger each strip on the front of the card. It looks better if they are not perfectly straight and put them about 1/2 inch or so apart. I like to position each strip first before I glue them down. Start in the middle and work out.

6. If you want a sentiment, go ahead and write, print it out, or stamp one on a punched out shape or just a strip of plain white paper! I used an acrylic stamp for mine, but I have also just written or printed sentiments too. Whatever you are most comfortable with. I also inked the edges of my sentiment.

7. I attached my sentiment with a pop dot. It's basically a piece of foam with adhesive on both sides. It gives your card dimension and looks great!

8. When your done, think of someone you can give your card to and tell them it is handmade! They will be so impressed!
