Today's Guest: Flamingo Toes

Hello Pocket Full of Pink Readers!! I am so excited to be here as part of Karen's Monster Craft Bash!!

My name is Bev and I blog over at Flamingo Toes.

Since we're nearing the middle of October, I wanted to do a craft that would be quick and easy - and fun of course!!

I think this little Spider Mummy Family works out great!

Pretty silly right? I know. I thought they'd be fun for kiddos - their legs are wire and bendable!

Let's face it though - my big kids are going to have fun bending their legs all around too! :)

Here's a quick tutorial for you:

You'll need:

3 - 2 1/2" Styrofoam balls - 2 for the heads for the big spiders and 1 for the body of the baby

2 - 4" Styrofoam balls for the bodies of the big spiders

1 - 1 1/2" Styrofoam ball for baby's head

Wire for legs - I used floral craft wire - 4 - 15" pieces for dad, 4 - 13" pieces for mom, 4 - 8" pieces for baby.

white fabric strips

white fabric piece - 8 1/2" x 11"

Freezer Paper - 8 1/2" x 11"

16 - 1" wooden balls (with a hole in at least one end) for the big spider's feet - spray painted black

8 - 5/8" wooden balls (with a hole in at least one end) for the baby's feet - spray painted black

hot glue

Last year for Halloween I made some fun Eyeballs - this is a similar idea but in Spider Form!

Start by ironing your paper sized fabric and freezer paper together. Iron the fabric to the shiny side of the freezer paper and trim around all four sides to make sure the edges are straight.

Place your fabric piece in your printer so that the fabric side will be printed on. Print the eyes out onto the fabric.

Trim around each set of eyes in an oval. It doesn't have to be perfect (obviously ;) but leave enough that the black around the eyes will show. You want them to look like black spiders under their mummy wrappings.

After you've cut the ovals, peel off your freezer paper.

Glue the eyes onto the Styrofoam head. It's going to pucker a little, try and keep it towards the ends, not over the actual eye part.

Tear your fabric into thin (ish) strips. This is easy, just make a slit with your scissors near the selvage and pull apart.

This will tear the fabric in a straight line, and give you nice lightly frayed edges.

Wrap your strips around the spiders head, covering all of the Styrofoam but leaving the eyes peeking through. Glue the end of the strip down.

Repeat the same process with the strips for the body of the spider.

Tear more strips for the leg pieces. You'll need 4 pieces for the big spider about 1" wide by double the length of the wire.

So 4 pieces 1" x 30" for the biggest spider.

Fold each strip in half, lengthwise, and sew together 1/4" from the frayed edges.

Feed a piece of wire into each strip. The strip will be gathered and ruffly on the wire.

Bend the wire into a little of an "M" shape. The body of the spider will sit in the middle curve.

Glue each end into the hole of a painted wooden bead.

Glue the four leg pieces to the bottom of the body piece. They should be pretty close together.

Press down a little indent into the front of the body, where the head will sit. Glue the head on.

That's it!! Easy Peasy right?? Repeat for all your spiders and you'll have the whole family!!

I hope you like them!!!

  3. Very cute! I've never printed on fabric before...does that freezer paper just help it go through the printer smoothly? What a great idea!
